Secretary Jewell to Keynote Western Governors' Association Annual Winter Meeting - Archive

The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on Dec. 3, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

LAS VEGAS – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will deliver keynote remarks at the annual winter meeting of the Western Governors' Association (WGA) in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Friday, December 4. Secretary Jewell’s remarks will focus on areas of collaboration with Western Governors, including conservation goals, natural resource development and wildfire.

Secretary Jewell will be joined by Interior colleagues Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Janice Schneider, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Jim Lyons and Bureau of Land Management Deputy Director Steve Ellis. Assistant Secretary Schneider will join a panel discussion after Jewell's remarks focused on the impacts of the recent wildfire season on Western landscapes and the need for a change in the way the nation pays for wildfire costs so that we can continue to adequately invest in forest and rangeland restoration and make lands more resilient and less vulnerable to catastrophic wildfires.

The Western Governors' Association, founded in 1984 and representing the governors of 19 states and three US-Flag Pacific islands, helps the Governors develop bipartisan policy solutions for key Western issues such as energy, drought, wildfire, natural resources and land management.
