WASHINGTON, D.C. – Next week, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will travel to North Dakota to highlight steps the Obama Administration is taking to create jobs, decrease our dependence on foreign oil, cut carbon pollution, and grow our economy as part of an all-of-the-above American-made energy strategy. This will be the Jewell's first trip to the Bakken region as Secretary.
On Tuesday, August 6, Secretary Jewell will travel to Williston, N.D., and the surrounding area to tour oil and gas development operations on federal mineral estate in western North Dakota, where oil and gas production is rapidly expanding on federal, state, and private lands.
Accompanied by U.S. Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and Lieutenant Governor Drew Wrigley, Secretary Jewell will visit a drilling rig actively producing oil from federal resources; tour a crude oil production facility where oil is processed, stored, and transported via truck, rail and pipelines to refineries across the country; and inspect innovative technologies to capture and reduce fugitive methane emissions. The President's Climate Action Plan calls for the Administration to work collaboratively with state governments, as well as the private sector, to reduce emissions across multiple sectors, improve air quality, and achieve public health and economic benefits.
On Wednesday, August 7, Secretary Jewell will meet with the Bakken Federal Executive Working Group, which represents a dozen federal bureaus with review responsibilities in the Bakken. The group was identified by the President as one of five priority regional initiatives under Executive Order 13604 , Improving Performance of Federal Permitting and Review of Infrastructure Projects. The group is working collaboratively to address common obstacles associated with the Bakken energy boom in western North Dakota.
