The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on March 23, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff, and Assistant Secretary of the Army Jo-Ellen Darcy will hold a hydropower workshop with stakeholders from industry and environmental groups and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on low impact hydropower.

As the largest source of renewable electricity generation in the United States, hydropower provides a wide range of benefits to the country. Hydropower is a low emission, low-cost source of energy that can be relied upon for long-term, stable production of domestic electricity.

The MOU, which will be signed by the Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, and Army Corps of Engineers, is intended to represent a new approach to hydropower development that will increase the production of clean, renewable power generation, while avoiding or reducing environmental impacts and enhancing the viability of ecosystems.
