Secretary Jewell to Deliver Keynote Remarks at National Congress of American Indians Mid-Year Conference - Archive

SPOKANE, WASH. – On Wednesday, June 29, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will deliver keynote remarks at the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Mid-Year Conference in Spokane, Washington.

Secretary Jewell, who serves as chair of the White House Council on Native American Affairs, will discuss efforts to cement the progress for Indian Country the Obama Administration has made and ensure permanency for those gains into the next Administration. She will highlight specific priority areas, including restoring tribal homelands, reforming tribal education, strengthening child welfare, bolstering co-management opportunities and protecting tribal sacred sites and cultural patrimony.

This will be the Secretary’s third address to the National Congress of American Indians, which was founded in 1944, and is the oldest and largest American Indian and Alaska Native organization. The White House Council on Native American Affairs includes the heads of more than 20 federal departments and agencies and works to improve interagency coordination and expand efforts to leverage federal programs and resources available to tribal communities.
