Secretary Jewell to Highlight Conservation Efforts in Washington State, Discuss Importance of Trans-Pacific Partnership for Region - Archive

The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on July 15, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

SEATTLE – On Monday, July 18, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will join U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell and U.S. Representative Dave Reichert at Gas Works Park on the north shore of Lake Union in Seattle, Wash. to highlight the important contributions of the Land and Water Conservation Fund in Washington state. Secretary Jewell will also participate in a discussion on the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement at the Washington Council of International Trade (WCIT) 2016 Summer Luncheon.

As both a member of the Obama Administration cabinet and a former Washington state business executive, Secretary Jewell will share her unique perspective on the role of strong trade policies and how they can protect not only American workers, but additionally, wildlife and the environment.

While the TPP was signed by 12 member countries earlier this year, it has not yet entered into force. This historic agreement holds important tools to move trading partners toward more sustainable development, demonstrating that countries can successfully pursue trade and economic development while enhancing protections for our shared world. The TPP includes the most comprehensive environmental commitments ever negotiated in a trade agreement, and addresses pressing environmental challenges like wildlife trafficking, illegal logging and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. It also includes commitments to conserve species like rhinos, elephants and pangolins and protect natural areas and forests.

The TPP provides for the strongest international commitments to fight the illegal trade in endangered species of any trade agreement in history. By increasing enforcement, enhancing information sharing and mandating action, the Obama Administration is helping cut off supplies of illegal ivory, rhino horn and other items and preventing poaching with the end goal of saving iconic species for the benefit of future generations.

Sean O’Hollaren, Senior Vice President, Government and Public Affairs for NIKE, Inc. will moderate the discussion. WCIT is an association that advocates for pro-trade policies and investments benefitting Washington State’s business community.
