“The first Mexican-American woman to serve in the Congress, the first Latina on the Appropriations Committee, the first woman to Chair the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard is a trailblazer, a champion for the people of California, and a force on the Appropriations Committee and the Congress. It has been my privilege to have a front row seat to her work for decades.
“As Chairwoman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee, Representative Roybal-Allard has carried out a difficult assignment with grit and grace. Her deep knowledge of the issues, her close relationship with advocates, and her unyielding focus on a fair immigration system and a nation where our border, ports, skies, and cyberspace are protected have been critical to the success of Congress’ appropriations work. Her leadership as author of the Dream and Promise Act has been so critical in providing hope to millions of young people striving to fully participate in our society. And her founding of the Immigration Women’s Working Group has helped ensure that women’s voices are heard in this critical debate and that women’s interests are served by our nation’s immigration policies.
“I have also been honored to sit beside Representative Roybal-Allard on the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee, where she serves as Vice Chair. On Labor-H, Representative Roybal-Allard was a key partner in securing funding to research the impacts the expanded and improved Child Tax Credit would have on children and families. She has carried forward the work of her late father Edward, by fighting for maternal health and lifesaving medical research, child care, early childhood education, and college affordability, and safe and fair workplaces. Her leadership to reduce underage drinking has also been vital to saving the lives of young people.
