Chairwoman Maloney Issues Statement on One Year Anniversary of January 6 Attack

Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement commemorating the one-year anniversary of the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021:

“The violent domestic terrorist attack of January 6, 2021, will forever be a scar on our nation’s history.  The campaign by former President Trump and his allies to propagate the ‘Big Lie’ and seek to overturn a free and fair election cost lives and struck at the heart of our democracy.

“Since the January 6 insurrection, I have done everything in my power to learn the truth about that attack and prevent further assaults on our democracy.  My Committee held landmark hearings, uncovered new documents, and released detailed timelines.  My Committee revealed President Trump’s campaign to corrupt our nation’s chief law enforcement agency in a brazen attempt to overturn an election that he lost, including his instruction to top officials at the Department of Justice: ‘just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen.’

“I have also fought for legislative reforms, proudly joining fellow congressional leaders in championing the Protecting Our Democracy Act to prevent abuses of power like those during the Trump Administration.  The House has now passed this critical legislation, and I urge the Senate to take up this bill to protect against future abuses, no matter who is in power.

“As the Select Committee continues to uncover more damning facts about the insurrection, my Committee remains committed to protecting our democratic institutions—including by investigating efforts to suppress votes and subvert elections.  We must never forget the horrific events we witnessed last year.  The Oversight Committee will continue to fulfill our duty to prevent future acts of domestic terrorism and preserve the sanctity of our elections.”
