NOAA Fisheries highlight importance of surveys in 'Dive in with NOAA Fisheries' podcast

The U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) new podcast outlines the organization’s surveys conducted on marine life throughout the country.

A post on NOAA’s website Jan. 11 details the first episode of the new podcast, inviting listeners to tune in to the first guest, Dr. Cisco Werner, NOAA Fisheries' director of Scientific Programs and chief science advisor.

“NOAA Fisheries conducts world-class science to support sustainable marine life and habitats. Our new podcast, 'Dive in with NOAA Fisheries,’ is about the work we do and the people behind it,” NOAA Fisheries wrote on their website.

According to the post, NOAA Fisheries manages millions of square miles of ocean, almost 100,000 miles of coastline and oversees a 244 billion dollar fishing industry. With this, they work to protect and rebuild endangered marine species and habitats through a deep understanding of ocean conditions.

In the podcast, Werner elaborated on NOAA Fisheries’ survey work conducted over the past 150 years. This includes field surveys which gather data to understand current and changing ocean conditions and to monitor marine life.

With climate change and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Werner said these important surveys have changed in recent years as they adapted new ways of accelerating surveys and growing industry partnerships to continue to collect data while being unable to make it out to sea.
