Washington, D.C. - Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, expressed shock and concern that Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attacked the nominee for Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Gina McCarthy, before she has even had a nomination hearing.
Senator Boxer said: "This attack on Gina McCarthy is inexplicable given that she was previously confirmed by the Senate for a top EPA position without a single recorded ‘no' vote, and she is one of the most qualified and bipartisan nominees to ever come before the Senate."
McCarthy served four Republican Governors in various capacities. These Republican Governors are Jodi Rell of Connecticut, and three Republican Governors from Massachusetts - Paul Cellucci, Jane Swift, and Mitt Romney.
Republican Leader McConnell in his statement also attacked EPA, which gets a 70 percent approval rating for its work to protect clean air and clean water.
Senator Boxer said: "I hope Senator McConnell reconsiders his opposition after he reads the transcript from the Environment and Public Works Committee nomination hearing tomorrow, and reflects on her stellar record of listening to all parties, including industry, before making decisions."
