Mounds man sentenced to life in prison for 'egregious, senseless' murder in Native American reservation

Mounds resident Kyle Sago has been sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years after fatally shooting his friend at the Muscogee Nation reservation.

The sentencing came last Thursday from Judge Gregory Frizzel. In September, Kyle Sago was convicted of first-degree murder, two counts of felon in possession of ammunition, and causing death by discharging a firearm to commit first-degree murder. On July 25, 2020, Sago took the life of Daniel Morgan by shooting him four times shortly after the two men rekindled their friendship.

U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated that Sago's crime was both egregious and senseless. “While today’s sentence cannot rectify the loss of Mr. Morgan, it sends a message that the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners take seriously our mission to uphold justice,” Johnson said.

As there was no apparent motive for the murder, Gregory Frizzel theorized that Sago committed the crime because of his long history of drug use. Frizzel called meth a 'scourge.' calling meth a 'scourge.'

Daniel Morgan had saved Kyle Sago from a meth lab fire several years before the murder. Sago retains the burns to this day.

During Sago's sentencing hearing, Daniel Morgan's daughter spoke of her father's character, stating that he was reliable and kind. She said that she missed his laugh as well as his appearances at her birthday parties.
