WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today issued the following statement on the one year anniversary of the health care law:
“The past year has been one filled with broken promises. When President Obama signed into law the health care package, Democrats promised it would create jobs, lower costs, and they proclaimed, ‘if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.’ One year later, we understand the law actually stifles job creation, increases costs for all taxpayers, businesses, and states, and 2.6 million people thus far need a waiver to keep their current plans. Promises made, promises broken.
“Republicans are committed to moving forward and replacing the harmful mandates with consumer driven alternatives. It’s time to implement fresh ideas that preserve and embrace the free-market principles that made America the successful and innovative country she is today. However, we understand that the best ideas don’t always come from Washington, and they rarely come in a massive 2,900 page bill. We’re in Washington to represent and implement the American people’s ideas, and strongly urge folks to make their voices heard. The committee will continue to hold hearings and gather ideas from our constituents, state leaders, and job creators to determine the most effective way to address the critical issues facing our health care system, and we will move forward on sensible legislative solutions in the coming months. The American people deserve better."
