WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI), chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement today after 64 Senators voted for one or more proposals to block the Environmental Protection Agency from imposing a backdoor cap-and-trade agenda by regulating greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act:
“Today’s Senate votes prove momentum is on our side - and on the side of job creators and hardworking families - as we fight to stop the EPA from driving up energy prices and shipping U.S. jobs overseas. The Energy Tax Prevention Act continues to draw bipartisan support because it is a sensible, carefully drawn plan to put the brakes on runaway regulations.
“I commend Senators McConnell and Inhofe for sending a signal that this issue cannot be ignored, and Members of Congress will not stand idly by while the EPA grants itself new authority to increase the price of energy and put us at a competitive disadvantage with the rest of the world. From the outset, it has been my goal to advance a sensible, bipartisan plan through both the House and Senate so we can stop the EPA and put Congress back in charge of our energy future. Today’s Senate vote proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the bipartisan consensus is to stop the EPA’s regulatory march, and I look forward to a strong vote in the House tomorrow to do exactly that."
