WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Ed Whitfield (R-KY), and Environment and the Economy Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL), today urged President Obama to re-nominate NRC Commissioner Kristine Svinicki for another term. Commissioner Svinicki’s term ends on June 30, 2012.
Upton, Whitfield, and Shimkus made the following statement:
“As a former senator, President Obama surely appreciates that the Senate’s approval of administration appointments does not occur overnight. Commissioner Svinicki has served with great distinction, selflessly putting the Commission’s mission first and foremost, yet her re-nomination continues to be delayed.
“As the NRC weathers an unprecedented storm brought on by the Commission’s brazen chairman, Svinicki’s presence has been a welcome, stabilizing force. We believe her continued service will help shepherd our nuclear renaissance and guard our nation’s nuclear safety.
“The clock is ticking on Commissioner Svinicki’s term and it is critical for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to continue working in its full capacity. President Obama is playing a dangerous game by delaying the re-nomination of Commissioner Svinicki, needlessly jeopardizing our nuclear future.
“It is well past time for the president to re-nominate Kristine Svinicki to the NRC - the nation will be safer for it."
