WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing schedule for the week of March 10, 2014. The committee will review discussion drafts of the Chemicals in Commerce Act and legislation to reauthorize the satellite television law, as well as discuss how the administration’s proposed cuts to Medicare Advantage threaten seniors’ access to care, and examine ways to improve sports safety.
On Wednesday, March 12, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will review a draft of the Chemicals in Commerce Act. Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL) unveiled a draft of the Chemicals in Commerce Act last week, which would reform the decades-old Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The bill aims to improve public confidence in the safety of chemicals produced and used in the United States and facilitate interstate commerce and a manufacturing renaissance.as they are posted.
Also on Wednesday, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will review draft legislation to reauthorize the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act (STELA). The Majority Memorandum and witness testimony will be available at the same link as they are posted.
On Thursday, March 13, the Subcommittee on Health will continue its efforts to keep the promise of Medicare to seniors. The president’s health care law and recent cuts the administration has made to the Medicare Advantage program threaten to deliver more broken health care promises, this time to our nation’s seniors and those with disabilities. Health Subcommittee members warned in December that, because the health care law raids more than $300 billion from Medicare Advantage and spends it on new government programs not for seniors, beneficiaries would suffer the consequences, including lost access to doctors and cancelled plans. Subcommittee members will discuss the successes of the Medicare Advantage program and how the administration’s proposed cuts and the president’s health care law threaten the future of the program and the care its beneficiaries rely on.as they are posted.
Also on Thursday, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade will hold a hearing to examine ongoing efforts to prevent and mitigate the occurrence of concussions in sports. This includes game rule changes, coaching and player education, and the development and state adoption of return-to-play guidelines, as well as developing brain injury research and equipment research and development. Witnesses will include representatives from professional sports leagues, youth leagues, researchers in both the neurology and physics fields, and the Federal Trade Commission.as they are posted.
