WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today applauded the Senate’s approval of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, legislation introduced by committee member Rep. Gregg Harper (R-MS). The bill, which would redirect wasteful spending on political conventions to important pediatric research, now heads to the president’s desk to become law. This law will mark the ninth public health bill the Energy and Commerce Committee has seen become law in the 113th Congress.
“This bipartisan achievement is a testament to the courage of Gabriella Miller. Gabriella’s strength and disposition should serve as an inspiration to all of us. While we wish she could be here to see this important bill become law, her legacy is providing hope to kids and families all across the country, including the Kennedy family from Mattawan, Michigan. Brooke and Brielle Kennedy, who have the rare disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy, share the same bright outlook on life as Gabriella and I am happy to report that today’s vote in the Senate will help children just like them," commented Upton. “The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act will be a vital tool in our effort to accelerate cures and advance the public health and I am thrilled to see it move one step closer to becoming law."
The House of Representatives approved the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act in December.
