The Subcommittee on Health, chaired by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “21st Century Cures: Examining the Regulation of Laboratory Developed Tests." Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, Director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health at the Food and Drug Administration, will be among the witnesses.
The 21st Century Cures initiative continued throughout August with events around the country, garnering support and generating ideas for how to accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery cycle of cures. Two central goals of this initiative are encouraging innovation and embracing the rise of personalized medicine. The conversation will continue next week with a hearing to discuss recent guidance offered by the Food and Drug Administration regarding the regulation of Lab Developed Tests (LDTs). Members will hear testimony from various witnesses on the guidance and its impact on innovation and the practice of precision medicine.
