WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) today responded to the Federal Trade Commission’s report on the Internet of Things.

“The Internet is no longer a place we go to on occasion just to check email and access information, but it is now an integral part of our daily lives, helping us track our fitness, our sleep, and even control our home thermostats. The Internet of Things is one of the areas of great growth for our economy, and it has the potential to offer incredible benefits to consumers. While public awareness of the Internet of Things is still in its early stages, now is the time to understand its future prospects and ensure that companies are protecting personal information when they introduce connected devices and services into the marketplace. We also must be certain that throughout this process we don’t smother innovation that can improve the quality of life for consumers and create jobs. We must exercise great caution to avoid the slippery slope of the Internet of Things evolving into the Internet of Regulation. Let’s stay on this path of remarkable breakthroughs and advancement," said Upton and Burgess.
