Subcommittee to Examine Cyber Threats and Implications for the 21st Century Economy

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Feb. 24, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Understanding the Cyber Threat and Implications for the 21st Century Economy."

Recent high-profile breaches have raised awareness of the vulnerabilities and risks facing our digital infrastructure, and with a series of hearings the committee will seek to broaden the discussion surrounding cyber threats to determine what they mean for businesses and consumers in today’s 21st Century economy. Next week’s hearing will provide a holistic overview of the issue, focusing on the history, evolution, and future of cybersecurity. A panel of private sector experts will testify on the structure of the Internet, current trends and emerging threats, and the future of technology.

“The Internet has transformed the consumer marketplace. But without a strong cybersecurity framework, daily commerce would come to a grinding halt not only in the United States but across the globe," said Chairman Murphy. “This initial hearing will explore the threats of today’s interconnected world and the challenges this creates for effective cybersecurity. Examining the evolution of cyber threats will help our efforts to find solutions to bolster security without compromising growth and innovation."

The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
