The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, June 2, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Medicaid Program Integrity: Screening Out Errors, Fraud, and Abuse."
Improper payments have been a persistent problem plaguing the Medicaid program. In Fiscal Year 2014, the federal government spent more than $300 billion on this vital program, but according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the improper payment rate for Medicaid was 6.7 percent, or $17.5 billion. That is an unwelcome increase of nearly 1 percent, or more than $3 billion from the year previous. Additionally, a recent Reuters report found, “more than one in five of the thousands of doctors and other health care providers in the U.S. prohibited from billing Medicare are still able to bill state Medicaid programs." Subcommittee members will discuss the integrity of the Medicaid program as part of the committee’s ongoing effort to ensure the program is able to deliver on its core promise of providing for the most vulnerable.as they are posted.
