Upton Statement on Supreme Court Ruling in King v. Burwell

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on June 25, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today issued following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of the administration in the case of King v. Burwell.

“My colleagues and I have spent the past several months working with my own Governor Rick Snyder and governors and state leaders across the country to develop solutions so that more Americans are not victimized further by this law. What remains today is a law that is deeply unpopular, and that has broken all of its core promises. Over the past five years, millions of plans have been cancelled, the cost of health care has skyrocketed, and access to care has been limited. Time and again, the administration worked around its own law to force its policies on the American people. Folks in Michigan tell me that they are looking to Washington for real solutions that lower costs and improve access to quality care. That’s what we have done and will continue to do."

NOTE: Chairman Upton joined with Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) earlier this year to introduce the Patient Choice, Affordability, Responsibility, and Empowerment (CARE) Act - a legislative plan that repeals Obamacare and replaces it with common-sense, patient-focused reforms that reduce health care costs and increase access to affordable, high-quality care. This proposal empowers the American people to make the best health care choices for themselves and their families. Learn more about the Patient CARE Act online HERE.
