The Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, chaired by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “FCC Overreach: Examining the Proposed Privacy Rules."
The hearing comes on the heels of a recent committee letter to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler regarding the agency’s proposed privacy and data breach notification requirements for broadband Internet service providers (ISPs).
When the FCC reclassified broadband as a common carrier, the agency removed it from the jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission, the traditional federal privacy regulator. The FCC’s proposed rules would create a separate set of rules governing only ISPs and not other parts of the Internet ecosystem, creating confusion for consumers and harming competition.
“When the FCC overreaches, it’s normally bad news for consumers and the economy," said Chairman Walden. “Consumers deserve to be protected and the FCC’s privacy approach simply misses the mark. Next week’s hearing will provide the opportunity to examine the consequences of the FCC’s proposal to regulate ISPs under separate privacy rules from the rest of the Internet."
