Upton and Walden Seek Briefing on FCC Commissioner Pai’s Lifeline Investigation

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on July 15, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) today sent a letter to Federal Communications Commissioner Ajit Pai requesting a briefing from Commissioner Pai’s staff regarding his current investigation into the Universal Service Lifeline program. On May 26, 2016, the committee launched its own investigation into the waste, fraud, and abuse in the Lifeline program. The committee leaders have also requested information from the Universal Service Administrative Company.

Upton and Walden write, “It is our understanding that you are undertaking an inquiry into the Lifeline program. … According to information released by your office, data provided by USAC in response to these inquiries demonstrates Total Call Mobile, Inc. was not an outlier, but that significant and continuing failures in program safeguards have permitted pervasive waste, fraud, and abuse over at least the last several years."

“In order to inform the Committee of your findings and in furtherance of our investigation into these matters," continued the leaders. “We request… that you make your staff available to brief Committee staff during the week of July 24, 2016 at a time to be determined."
