Pallone on Trump’s Claim to “Guarantee” Protections for Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 1, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) responded to President Donald Trump’s claims on CBS Face the Nation yesterday that the Trumpcare bill guarantees protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions:

“Either President Trump hasn’t read his own bill, or he is purposefully misrepresenting it to the American people. The current version of Trumpcare allows insurance companies to discriminate against the 129 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Any state can easily apply for a waiver that eliminates critical consumer protections and allows insurance companies to charge people with pre-existing conditions whatever they want for health coverage.

“The changes to Trumpcare over the last week have made an already terrible bill much worse. It’s time for the President to start leveling with the American people that his bill breaks his campaign promise on pre-existing conditions."
