HEARING: #SubOversight to Further Examine Federal Cybersecurity Efforts in Health Care Sector

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), announced a hearing for Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Examining the Role of the Department of Health and Human Services in Health Care Cybersecurity."

#SubOversight will examine the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) role in cybersecurity efforts within the health care sector. The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISA), which became law in 2015, required HHS to submit two reports to Congress about its internal cybersecurity processes and industry recommendations for what the federal government and industry can do to improve cybersecurity efforts in the health care sector.

“While health care information technologies have greatly improved patient care and increased patient involvement in their treatment, recent incidents like the ‘WannaCry’ Ransomware outbreak have reinforced the fact that these technologies, and the health care sector as a whole, are vulnerable to cybersecurity threats and in some cases, are ill prepared," said Chairman Murphy. “This hearing will provide an opportunity to explore what HHS can do to more effectively address cybersecurity vulnerabilities and ensure that we are proactive in protecting against these similar incidents."

Next week’s hearing builds on #SubOversight’s April hearing examining public-private partnerships for health care cybersecurity and will further examine HHS’s role and effectiveness in addressing this rapidly evolving challenge for the health care sector.as they are posted. See Also
