“Only the divisive Trump Administration would use the Office for Civil Rights to implement policies that infringe on the rights of Americans"
Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement slamming the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announcement on its decision to create a new Conscience and Religious Freedom Division in the Office for Civil Rights:
“The so-called Conscience and Religious Freedom Division in the Office for Civil Rights is the latest attempt by the Trump Administration to roll back the rights of women and the LGBTQ community.
“Only the divisive Trump Administration would use the Office for Civil Rights to implement policies that infringe on the rights of Americans and restrict access to health care under the guise of religious freedom. Religious freedom should not mean that our health care providers have a license to discriminate or impose their beliefs on others. Everyone, regardless of their personal beliefs, gender identity, or sexual orientation, should be treated as equals in our healthcare system.
“I will closely monitor the actions of this new division and will continue to oppose any policies that increase the harmful inequities that already exist in our healthcare system."
