WASHINGTON, DC - The Environment Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), today announced a markup for Wednesday, June 27, 2018 in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building at 11:00 a.m. or 15 minutes after the conclusion the Subcommittee on Health markup, whichever is later.
Building on the committee’s work on nuclear waste management, #SubEnvironment will consider several pieces of legislation that advance the Department of Energy’s environmental remediation efforts.
#SubEnvironment will consider the following bills:
H.R. 2278, the Responsible Disposal Reauthorization Act of 2017, from Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO), amends the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Controls Act of 1978 to extend the authorization for the Secretary of Energy to continue the operation of the disposal site in Mesa County, Colorado (known as the Cheney disposal cell) for receiving and disposing of residual radioactive material from processing sites and of byproduct material from property in the vicinity of the uranium milling site located in Monticello, Utah, from Sept. 30, 2023 to Sept. 30, 2048.
H.R. 2389, to reauthorize the West Valley demonstration project, and for other purposes, from Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY), reauthorizes for FY2017-FY2026 the West Valley Demonstration Project located in West Valley, New York. Additionally, legislation considers the disposal pathway for the project’s radioactive waste.
“The federal government is responsible for the safe disposal of a significant amount of nuclear materials, which requires effective planning and a disposal pathway," said Chairman Shimkus. “The bills under consideration Wednesday ensure the continued safe disposal of radioactive material."
