WASHINGTON, DC - The Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), today announced a markup for Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at 1 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
Advancing from #SubHealth, the full committee will consider:
* H.R. 6378, the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2018, authored by Reps. Susan Brooks (R-IN) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA), will reauthorize key preparedness and response programs within the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA) for five years. The bill will also provide resources for the development of medical countermeasures for pandemic influenza and emerging infectious diseases within Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). H.R. __ was the subject of a June 2018 legislative hearing. H.R. 6378 passed #SubHealth last month, as amended, by voice vote.
Advancing from #SubEnergy, the full committee will consider:
* H.R. 6351 the Advancing U.S. Civil Nuclear Competitiveness and Jobs Act,authored by Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH), will increase competitiveness of U.S. nuclear energy companies by requiring the Secretary of Energy to assess the impact of regulatory, policy, and legal requirements on the domestic nuclear energy industry and make recommendations to improve the competitiveness of our civilian nuclear commerce policies in global markets. Additionally, the legislation will streamline cumbersome portions of Department of Energy’s (DOE) “Part 810" export review procedures and improve the timeliness of the approval process. In December 2017, #SubEnergy Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Johnson wrote a letter to the Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Rick Perry expressing concern with the pace of international civil nuclear trade authorizations. H.R. 6351 was the subject of a May 2018 legislative hearing. H.R. 6351 passed #SubEnergy last month by a bipartisan vote of 20-13.
“Our work continues on behalf of American patients and consumers this week as we consider important legislation that seeks to advance our public health efforts and address key challenges facing America’s nuclear energy industry," said Chairman Walden. “It is critically important we reauthorize PAHPA ahead of the end of September. We must ensure our country is equipped for any potential attack and this bipartisan reauthorization will go a long way in ensuring we have the proper tools at our disposal to prevent such attacks from happening and being able to respond when they do arise. We’ll also consider important legislation that will streamline time-consuming portions of DOE’s ‘Part 810’ regulations to enhance the global competitiveness of our domestic nuclear suppliers - creating economic opportunity for American nuclear workers and protecting our national security interests."
