Pallone & Rush Push Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey On Commitment for Civil Rights Audit

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 24, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Congressman Bobby Rush (D-IL) sent a letter today to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to confirm a commitment he made during his testimony before the Committee on September 5th that Twitter would soon have an independent, third party conduct a civil rights audit of the platform.

The Congressmen believe a civil rights audit of Twitter is warranted due to concerns that some users misuse the platform to promote divisive content and misinformation. Other technology platforms, such as Facebook and Airbnb, have undertaken similar audits of their platforms.

“An audit of Twitter would be a positive step forward. We also are watching your efforts to provide greater consistency and transparency in the enforcement of your rules," Pallone and Rush wrote in their letter. “Swift, fair enforcement of your policies-regardless of who is behind an offending account-would go a long way toward regaining the public’s trust in your service."

As discussed at the hearing, Pallone and Rush are expecting a robust report from Twitter on its progress by October 5, 2018.
