Walden and Shimkus on President Trump Signing CFATS Reauthorization Into Law

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Jan. 18, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Energy and Commerce Committee Republican Leader Greg Walden (R-OR) and Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change Republican Leader John Shimkus (R-IL) issued the following statement after President Trump signed H.R. 251, as amended by the Senate, into law today to extend the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program for 15 months. Last week, the House overwhelmingly approved H.R. 251, which would have reauthorized the CFATS program for two years.

“We are glad our bipartisan House efforts were the key to extending the CFATS program and preventing this vital national security program from expiring," Walden and Shimkus said. “While we would have preferred the two-year extension of CFATS passed by the House last week as we have seen that shorter-term extensions do not offer program stability and stagnate improvements, we must ensure that high-risk chemical facilities remain secure and therefore support this extension of the program. We appreciate President Trump signing this critical reauthorization into law and look forward to continuing efforts on this program during this Congress."
