Walden, Burgess, and Guthrie Commend Announcements on Vaccine and Therapeutics Demonstrations

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on July 7, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Republican Leader Greg Walden (R-OR), Health Subcommittee Republican Leader Dr. Michael Burgess (R-TX), and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Republican Leader Brett Guthrie (R-KY) released the following statement on the latest announcements from the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Defense (DOD) that they would begin working with Novavax and Regeneron on large-scale manufacturing and distribution demonstrations through Operation Warp Speed.

“Under President Trump’s leadership through initiatives like Operation Warp Speed, we’re seeing unprecedented progress in the race to develop COVID-19 therapeutics and a vaccine. We commend HHS and DOD for their announcement of collaborations with Novavax and Regeneron to ensure that, once a vaccine and antiviral treatments are proven safe and effective, we can quickly and efficiently ramp up production and distribution.

“Every single day counts during this pandemic. As Dr. Fauci has previously said, the risk is in the financial investments made for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, not in the safety and scientific integrity. Instead of fully developing a vaccine or therapeutic and then figuring out how to manufacture and distribute it, Operation Warp Speed is working simultaneously on both. We thank the administration for their continued efforts to defeat the Invisible Enemy," said Walden, Burgess, and Guthrie.
