Pelosi Government Takeover of Health Care Burdens Working Families

Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the top Republican on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today highlighting the dangerous consequences of Speaker Pelosi’s proposed government takeover of health care for American families:

“Parents across the country should be focused on the health and well-being of their children, not trying to decipher Washington’s latest big government scheme. Unfortunately, at nearly 2,000 pages, Speaker Pelosi’s health care proposal will create a new maze of bureaucratic regulations and mandates that American families will be forced to navigate. It is a recipe for confusion and uncertainty that will make it harder for parents to get quality health care for their children and themselves.

“Republicans continue to promote health care reforms that would simplify the health insurance system and expand opportunities for individuals and families to buy quality, affordable coverage. Our efforts would empower mothers and fathers to make decisions regarding the health of their children without interference from Washington bureaucrats."

NOTE: In addition to the new taxes on individuals and the small businesses that employ them - as well as a new Washington standard for what qualifies as health insurance - the latest health care proposal offered by congressional Democrats would create 111 new boards, offices, commissions, and programs to manage the health care system. It would add millions of Americans to the Medicaid rolls, despite the fact that the program undermines patient choice and quality care by failing to fully pay for physician and hospital services. The Pelosi plan also will disproportionately burden women, 85 percent of whom are responsible for managing their family’s health care needs.
