Brenna Bird, Attorney General for the State of Iowa, announced her office's efforts in pursuing consumer-protection actions concerning big tech issues. She also highlighted collaborative work with fellow Attorneys General to combat crypto ATM scams and protect families. This statement was made at the 2025 National Lawyers Convention.

"Another area that you will see our offices working on is what I would call issues within big tech," said Bird, Attorney General of Iowa, according to YouTube. "Our office is suing CoinFlip and Bitcoin Depot. These crypto ATMs have been involved in facilitating people being ripped off by con artists. Consumers have been conned out of significant amounts of money through these schemes."

According to a panel organized by the Federalist Society, Bird discussed consumer protection measures and mentioned actions involving Bitcoin Depot and CoinFlip. The panel included Hon. Brenna Bird, Attorney General of Iowa; Hon. Derek Brown, Attorney General of Utah; Hon. Stephen J. Cox, Attorney General of Alaska; Hon. Mark Herring, Partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and Former Attorney General of Virginia; and Moderator Hon. Michael B. Mukasey, Of Counsel at Debevoise & Plimpton and Former U.S. Attorney General.

CoinFlip has implemented several consumer-protection steps designed to prevent scams at their machines. These include in-screen "Safe in Six" prompts that ask users to pause and answer six red-flag questions, as well as 24/7 live support trained to identify urgency, third-party wallet requests, or coercion before a transaction proceeds. Company materials stress education and escalation to compliance when red flags appear, presenting kiosks as monitored access points rather than "set-and-forget" devices.

Bitcoin Depot’s investor-relations site states that the company is headquartered at 2870 Peachtree Rd #327, Atlanta, Georgia 30305, United States. It operates approximately 8,800 kiosk locations within its network across North America.

Bird is Iowa’s 34th attorney general and was elected in November 2022 as the first Republican to hold the office since 1979. She assumed office in January 2023 after serving as Fremont County Attorney and Guthrie County Attorney and earlier as counsel in the governor’s office. A graduate of Drake University with a J.D. from the University of Chicago, Bird has focused on consumer protection and public safety while coordinating with local law enforcement and fellow state attorneys general.
