Kline: Government Takeover of Health Care Unworthy of the President’s Signature

The following was published by the House Committee on Education and Labor on March 23, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the top Republican on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after President Barack Obama signed into law the Democrats’ government takeover of health care:

“Democrats in Washington may be celebrating their recent legislative victory, but families and small businesses across the country are looking on in disappointment. President Obama and Speaker Pelosi ignored the voices of an overwhelming majority of Americans who rejected their quest to impose government takeovers of health care and student loans. Enacting government-run health care, and taking $9 billion from college students to help pay for it, is unconscionable and unworthy of the president’s signature.

“The American people will not forget the arm twisting and backroom dealing necessary to get this bill to the president’s desk. My Republican colleagues and I will continue to pursue responsible health care reform that lowers costs without growing the size of government. We have a responsibility to future generations to right the wrong that was done this past weekend, and continue to fight for meaningful health care reform the American people can support."

Rep. Kline voted against the bill the president signed into law today - a fiscally irresponsible plan loaded down with tax hikes, more than $200 billion in cuts to Medicare Advantage, and notorious backroom deals - as well as Democrats’ reconciliation “fix" bill with even more taxes, more cuts to senior care, and new special deals.
