Kline: Words Cannot Hide President’s History of Inaction

U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce Chairman John Kline (R-MN) has released the following statement after President Obama’s speech on the national debt crisis:

“I appreciate the president has finally acknowledged the severity of our nation’s debt crisis. However, words cannot hide his history of inaction on this issue.

“Just two months ago, the president released a job-destroying budget proposal that would impose a massive $1.5 trillion tax hike, add $9.1 trillion to the debt and allow irresponsible spending to continue in the name of ‘investment.’ Once again, the president has proposed higher taxes as an answer to Washington’s out-of-control spending addiction and failed to show true leadership in the face of this fiscal mess.

“Republicans know we cannot tax and spend our way to prosperity. That is why Rep. Paul Ryan has proposed a sensible budget that takes the steps necessary to end the spending binge, rein in entitlement spending, and begin paying off the debt that is crushing our nation - without piling higher taxes on American families and small businesses. If the president is serious about making sacrifices to get our fiscal house in order, he should join us in supporting the commonsense ideas outlined in Rep. Ryan’s budget."
