With parents, teachers, and education leaders demanding responsible reforms to the nation’s education system, members of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce are urging support for the Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act (H.R. 2218). This bipartisan legislation will facilitate the establishment and replication of high-performing charter schools, as well as encourage choice, innovation, and excellence in education. The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to hold a vote on the measure as early as tomorrow.
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) recently praised the benefits of this important education reform. “Charter schools enable parents to have a more active role in their children's education," Rep. Wilson said. “They pave the way for teachers to introduce fresh teaching methods while providing a viable option for students to escape from underperforming schools. This legislation is important to the educational needs of our nation's families and children."

Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-IN) also spoke on the House floor to applaud charter schools in Indiana and across the country. He shared his support for the Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act and described how the bipartisan legislation will encourage states and local districts to invest in high-quality charter schools.
“In my district in Evansville, Indiana, Signature School was ranked the top high school in the Midwest and the number three charter school in the country by The Washington Post," Bucshon stated. He continued, “Replicating schools like Signature School that have a proven history for effectively preparing our children for college is not only in the best interest of students and parents but also in the best interest of the economy. By increasing the number of students that are college ready, we build a more educated generation, more prepared to take on the complex jobs in health care, engineering, science and technology and others that future industries will demand."

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce is advancing a series of bills designed to reform elementary and secondary education law, currently known as No Child Left Behind. The Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act is the first piece of legislation from this package to come to the House floor for a vote.
