***MEDIA ADVISORY*** Full Committee To Examine Federal Role in Public School Accountability

The following was published by the House Committee on Education and Labor on Sept. 12, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

On Wednesday, September 14 at 10:00 a.m., the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will hold a hearing entitled, “Examining the Federal Role in Public School Accountability." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Under current elementary and secondary education law, school performance is measured by an accountability system known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). To make AYP, states are required to ensure all students are 100 percent proficient in math and reading by 2014. However, as this deadline draws near, an alarming number of schools are failing to demonstrate proficiency, evoking widespread concerns that the AYP system inaccurately labels schools and stigmatizes students.

Wednesday’s hearing will review problems within the AYP system, examine the appropriate federal role in accountability, and explore innovative state and local approaches to ensure schools are held accountable for student performance.
