This week House Education and the Workforce Committee business includes a full committee markup and a Workforce Protections Subcommittee hearing. Both the markup and hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.
On Wednesday, June 27th at 10:00 a.m., the committee, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will consider the Report on the Activities of the Committee on Education and the Workforce for the Third Quarter of the 112th Congress, a report summarizing the committee’s progress in addressing the many challenges facing classrooms and workplaces. On Thursday, June 28th at 10:00 a.m., the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), will hold a hearing entitled, “Promoting Safe Workplaces through Voluntary Protection Programs." Administered by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) recognize employers who implement workplace safety policies that exceed federal standards. Employers who participate in VPP are exempt from “generally scheduled" OSHA inspections. By encouraging employers to go beyond federal safety requirements and proactively promote the health and safety of their workers, VPP participants report fewer days away or restricted from work due to an injury or illness.
