***MEDIA ADVISORY*** "Dirty Jobs" Host Mike Rowe to Testify on the Need to Strengthen Career and Technical Education

The following was published by the House Committee on Education and Labor on Feb. 24, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

On Tuesday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, chaired by Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN), will hold a hearing entitled, “Providing More Students a Pathway to Success by Strengthening Career and Technical Education." The hearing will take place in room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Signed into law in 1984, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act provides federal support to state and local career and technical education (CTE) programs. These programs help students gain the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience they need to compete for in-demand jobs and succeed in today’s workforce.

In 2016, the House passed with overwhelming support the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. Sponsored by Reps. Glenn “GT" Thompson (R-PA) and Katherine Clark (D-MA), this legislation included bipartisan reforms to empower state and local community and education leaders, improve alignment with in-demand jobs, increase transparency and accountability, and ensure a limited federal role in CTE.

At the hearing, witnesses - including Mike Rowe, the CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation and TV host of "Dirty Jobs" and "Somebody’s Gotta Do It" - will discuss how CTE programs help prepare students for successful careers and meet the economic needs of communities and industries across the country. Members will also have an opportunity to explore reforms to update and improve the law to strengthen CTE for students, employers, and taxpayers.
