Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today issued the following statement in response to the resignation of James Runcie, chief operating officer of the Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA):
No one employed by the federal government should be immune from accountability, especially someone responsible for overseeing more than $1 trillion in federal student loans. This committee has repeatedly raised concerns about mismanagement within the Office of Federal Student Aid. Mr. Runcie has stood at the center of this mismanagement for years, and our concerns have largely fallen on deaf ears. Secretary DeVos has an important opportunity to instill new leadership and a new direction within the agency. I urge the secretary to seize this opportunity and work to ensure FSA is efficient, effective, and accountable to students, families, and hardworking taxpayers.
