US Department of Labor announces $12M funding opportunity to support improved enforcement of Mexico’s labor laws

The U.S. Department of Labor announced the availability of up to $12 million in funding to empower federal and state labor inspectors in Mexico to improve enforcement of the country’s landmark 2019 labor law reform in five states, with a focus on Northern States.

As part of its labor reform, the Government of Mexico has highlighted the importance of providing labor inspectors with the resources and training needed to ensure that employers comply with updated regulations and that workers’ rights are being respected.

Administered by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, this funding opportunity aligns with U.S. obligations in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and will support a project in the agreement’s priority sectors that seeks to do the following:

  • Improve labor law enforcement by federal and state labor inspectors.
  • Improve administration of federal and state labor inspections.
  • Improve federal and state labor inspectors’ engagement with supply chain actors regarding legal labor requirements.
