The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on March 9 said that 39 National Priority List (NPL) Superfund sites will be undergoing comprehensive reviews of the cleanup work.

According to an EPA press release, sites in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee will be completing five-year reviews.

"Five-Year Reviews are an integral part of the site remediation process because they help make sure remedies are still protective," EPA Region 4 Administrator Daniel Blackmon said, according to the release. "The Southeast Region will benefit tremendously from the full restoration of Superfund sites, which can become valuable parts of the community landscape."

EPA officials said that the five-year reviews are legally required and ensure remediation efforts performed at the sites in the past continue to provide public health and environmental safety.
