Memphis, TN - When Federal prisoners are finished with their incarceration, they are often placed in Bureau of Prisons Halfway Houses. These serve to introduce prisoners into society in a gradual way. Prisoners can work outside the facility or see family while still having oversight and structure as they transition to life post confinement.
However on occasion prisoners from these facilities “walk away" from them. They leave the facility and do not return. When this happens the Bureau of Prisons considers them escaped. At this point the U.S. Marshals Service gets involved. The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force adopts these cases as a fugitive matter.
On 5/30/19 Larico Nelson walked away from the Halfway House Facility here in Memphis. He was serving a sentence for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He was arrested by the U.S. Marshals in New Orleans, LA on 9/18/19.
On 10/24/19 Quantrese Brazzell walked away from the Halfway House Facility here in Memphis. He was serving a sentence for Robbery and a Drug charge. On 11/19/19 he was arrested in Memphis TN by local authorities.
On 11/05/19 Quintin Johnson walked away from the Halfway House in Memphis TN. He was serving a sentence for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. On 12/05/2019 investigators with the Marshals Task Force tracked him to the 1400 block of Englewood here in Memphis TN. He was found hiding in the attic and was placed under arrest.
All three fugitives now face the Federal charge of Escape from the Custody of an Institution. This is in addition to returning to a lock down Bureau of Prisons facility to finish their sentenced time on their previous charge.
“Prisoners need to understand that they don’t just have to face their old sentence," said U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee Jeff Holt. “Halfway House walkaways are facing an additional charge. We will continue to pursue these fugitives and assist in prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law."
The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force is a multi-agency task force with divisions in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The Western Tennessee Division of the GCRFTF has offices in Memphis and Jackson, and its membership is primarily composed of Deputy U.S. Marshals, Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies, Memphis Police Officers, Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies, Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies, Jackson Police Officers, BATF, and the Tennessee Department of Corrections Special Agents. The primary mission of the Task Force is to arrest violent offenders and sexual predators.
