Fort Smith, AR - At approximately 9:00 am this morning, a suspect wanted for Capital Murder in Springdale was captured by Deputies and Officers in Fort Smith near 1117 S. 4th St without incident.
On or about Feb. 3, 2020, the Western Arkansas Fugitive Task Force began working with Springdale Police to locate and capture Alex Amador. Amador was wanted for Capital Murder by the Springdale Police Department. On Feb. 11, 2020 at approximately 4:30 pm, Task Force Officers and Deputy US Marshals attempted to arrest Amador who was a passenger in a vehicle at the time. The driver of the vehicle fled from officers with Amador in the passenger seat until the vehicle lost control and left the roadway near South S and South 12th. Amador fled from officers and was believed to be armed at the time. The Task Force contacted Fort Smith Police and Sebastian County Sheriff’s Deputies and requested assistance in setting up a perimeter. Arkansas State Police, Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputies, and the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Police, all responded and assisted with personnel and equipment, including drone support.
Officers searched the area for several hours in the rain and darkness on the evening the 11th with negative results. On Wednesday morning, a citizen phoned police and reported that he spotted Amador near 1117 S. 4th Street. Officers responded, set up another perimeter, then searched and captured Amador without incident. Amador was wet and cold from having been out in the elements overnight.
Law enforcement would like to thank the media for circulating the story and photograph of Amador. This information coupled with multiple Fort Smith residents calling in tips and reports is what ultimately led to the capture.
The Western Arkansas Fugitive Task Force is led by the US Marshals Service and is comprised of members from the following agencies: Arkansas State Police, Arkansas Community Corrections-SRT, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Bentonville Police Department, Greenwood Police Department, Springdale Police Department, Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ashley County Sheriff’s Office. The mission of the Western Arkansas Fugitive Task Force is to arrest suspects wanted for violent offenses.
