Committee Examined Violations of the Hatch Act Under the Trump Administration

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on June 27, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. - Chairman Elijah E. Cummings convened a hearing entitled, “Violations of the Hatch Act Under the Trump Administration."

TAKEAWAYS

* Henry Kerner testified that Kellyanne Conway’s repeated and blatant Hatch Act violations are unprecedented. She continues to ignore the repeated warnings issued by the independent Office of Special Counsel (OSC) and even questioned whether she has to comply with the Hatch Act.

* Mr. Kerner testified that Kellyanne Conway’s “failure to follow the Hatch Act" and her announcement that she “essentially doesn’t care" undermines the fundamental principles of our democratic system because “it shows the rule of law only applies to the little people, that people who are well connected do not have to comply with the law."

* Committee Republicans attacked Mr. Kerner, a Trump appointee and former Republican staff member of this Committee, for doing his job and reporting Ms. Conway’s violations to the White House.

* Chairman Cummings invited Kellyanne Conway to testify at today’s hearing to respond to OSC’s findings. The White House sent a letter on behalf of Ms. Conway declining the Committee’s invitation. The Committee voted on a bipartisan basis to approve the issuance of a subpoena to Kellyanne Conway.
