Chairman Raskin to Hold Subcommittee Hearing on Treatment of Immigrant Children

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on July 9, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. -On July 10, 2019, the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, led by Chairman Jamie Raskin, will hold a hearing examining how the Trump Administration’s deterrence policies are creating a humanitarian crisis and jeopardizing the health and safety of the migrant children and families.

The Subcommittee also will address the gross lack of accountability at detention facilities. The witnesses will include a mother whose 19-month-old daughter died after spending nearly three weeks in an ICE detention facility. For months, press reports have detailed dangerous conditions at several detention facilities, including Clint, McAllen, and Homestead.

“Reports about the dangerous and inhumane conditions for babies, children, and families at the border have shaken Americans to the core," said Chairman Raskin. “We are determined to get all the facts out about the medical and emotional injuries being inflicted by Administration policies and then to act to rectify these awful abuses."
