WASHINGTON-House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) released the following statement after receiving a briefing from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) regarding the business reform plan released earlier this week:
“Postmaster General DeJoy and the Board of Governors have put forth a serious plan that makes hard decisions, seeks to bring the Postal Service into the 21st century, and ensures it is financially solvent for the long-term. As I said earlier this week, this plan warrants serious consideration by Congress but Democrats’ personal dislike of Postmaster General DeJoy is so immense it’s blinding them from considering the meaningful reform proposed in the plan. Instead of partnering with USPS leadership, all Democrats are focused on is ousting DeJoy and blocking any move he makes to improve the Postal Service’s financial sustainability and modernize it to reflect current realities.
“Early on this year, Chairwoman Maloney sought in good faith to pursue bipartisan USPS reform, but her approach doesn’t actually reform USPS. Her plan and that of other Democrats is to simply flood USPS with taxpayer dollars and hope for the best. That’s like pretending to fix a leaky bucket by adding more water.
“Unless we get to the core problem with USPS, nothing will change and America’s beloved Postal Service that we all rely on will continue to flounder. If we want to ensure the institution is protected, we must work together, answer the tough questions, pass meaningful reforms, and recognize that this isn’t political."
