The U.S. Senate confirmed Mallory Stewart as Assistant Secretary of State to the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance (AVC) March 29, the office announced on social media.

AVC stated the agency, part of the Department of State, is "thrilled" by Mallory's confirmation in the March 30 Twitter post.

"We look forward to her leadership as we continue our work advancing US vital interests in strategic stability and risk reduction,” AVC stated in the announcement.

Stewart brings extensive experience in global security and arms control, as the White House described in a July 2, 2021 announcement of Stewart's nomination by President Joseph R. Biden.

At the time of her nomination, Stewart was serving National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Arms Control, Disarmament, and Nonproliferation. Stewart has also worked in the federal government as the AVC's Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Emerging Security Challenges and Defense Policy; and in the DOS's Legal Advisor's Office, where she focused on arms control, according to the White House statement, which described Stewart as "one of the primary architects of the U.S.-Russia Framework to eliminate Syria's declared chemical weapons stockpile."

In addition to serving in the DOS, Stewart has been Senior Manager for Global Nuclear Security and Nonproliferation at Sandia National Laboratories; a Nonresident Fellow in the WMD, Nonproliferation and Security Program at the Stimson Center; and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Security Studies, the White House reports.

Stewart has received the Secretary of State’s Award for Excellence in International Security Affairs, among other honors, according to the White House.

Stewart succeeds Yleem D.S. Poblete, the AVC’s assistant secretary from 2018 to 2019 in the administration of former President Donald Trump, who nominated Poblete.
