A U.S. Department of Labor official visited Mexico earlier this month to meet with government officials, employers, workers and activists to discuss workers' rights in the global economy, the DOL announced recently.

While on an official visit to Mexico, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su recognized that country's recent efforts to support workers' rights under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and encouraged Mexico's government to continue implementing its 2019 labor reforms, according to a DOL announcement released April 4.

Deputy Sec. Lu also asked Mexico to join the Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment, and Rights initiative, an enterprise that supports trade-union rights, according to the announcement.

“Worker rights are at the foundation of inclusive economic development and a vibrant democracy," Deputy Sec. Lu said in the report. "We are grateful for Mexico’s leadership in these areas."

Deputy Sec. Su also announced combined investments of $28 million by the DOL to support projects in Mexico to strengthen workers' rights, promote freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, and the end of forced and child labor, the DOL reports.

“The Biden-Harris administration supports strong workers’ rights and ethical labor practices," Deputy Sec. Su said in the announcement. "Mexico’s actions to reform the country’s labor law in 2019 show us they believe the same.

"Together, we can deepen our collaboration to strengthen and expand workers’ rights.”
