Thompson Statement on the Terrorist Threat and the Need to Fund DHS

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on Jan. 7, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the terrorist threat and funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

Every day there are reminders of the diverse nature of the terrorist threat that we face. Today it was the deadly terrorist attack in Paris. Yesterday it was a bombing of an NAACP office in Colorado Springs, and just last month it was the Sony cyber attack. These incidents show us that it is critical for the key agency of the Federal government that Americans look to detect, deter, and respond to terrorism has the resources it needs. Unfortunately, the Department of Homeland Security is operating under the threat of a shutdown and is only funded through February. It is important that my Republican colleagues in Congress act responsibly, stop playing politics, and fund DHS without strings attached. The American people deserve better than to have Congress play politics with homeland security.
