Thompson: Administration Must Focus on Harvey Recovery, Not Wasteful Wall

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on Aug. 31, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

(WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Customs and Border Protection announcement of awards for border wall prototypes:

"Today's border 'wall' announcement from DHS to advance the President's pet project is incredibly tone deaf as flood waters from Hurricane Harvey still ravage Texas and Louisiana. The Department of Homeland Security's top priority should be its emergency response and recovery efforts as lives still need to be saved and preparations need to be made for a recovery that will take years. Funding relief efforts should be the focus - not obsessing over funding a wasteful, unnecessary wall that will do nothing but fulfill a campaign promise."
